LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 2007 BIG EAST Conference Cross Country Championship on October 27. The event was held at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The Friar women placed second in the field of 16 teams with 87 points. The Friar men took third in a field of 14 league teams with 74 points. On the women's side, the Friars were led individually by junior Danette Doetzel (Macklin, Saskatchewan). She completed the 6K course in a time of 20:27.85. She was joined by two other Providence runners who placed among the top-15 and earned All-BIG EAST honors. Junior Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, N.Y.) took sixth place with a time of 20:50.85. Sophomore Krystal Douglas (Harpswell, Maine) finished 11th overall with a time of 21:06.00. Also scoring for Providence were senior Michelle Childs (Cameron, Ontario) and sophomore Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland). Childs finished 20th (21:24.20), while Twohig placed 47th (22:04.90). West Virginia won the BIG EAST Team title with 77 points. Melissa Grelli of Georgetown captured the individual title with a time of 20:05.55. The Providence College women's cross country team, who made its 26th appearance at the league championship, placed among the top two as a team for the 15th time in program history. It also marks the fifth-consecutive year the Friars have placed either first or second at the championship. Last year, PC won the team title at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. The Friar women have won five BIG EAST team titles overall.
On the men's side, Providence was paced by senior Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) who finished fourth individually with a time of 23:29.55. He was joined by sophomore Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zeland) among the top-15 finishers who received All-BIG EAST honors. McLaren finished 13th in a time of 24:09.10. Also scoring for Providence at the league championship were senior Ahmed Haji (West Hartford, Conn.), freshman David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) and sophomore Michael Anderson (Ajax, Ontario). Haji took 17th place with a time of 24:20.15. McCarthy, who competed in his first BIG EAST Championship with the Friars as a freshman, placed 18th with a time of 24:20.60. McCarthy also was the highest finishing freshmen at the championship. Anderson earned a 22nd-place finish with a time of 24:29.80. The Providence men's cross country team made its 29th appearance all-time at the BIG EAST Championship. The Friars have finished among the top-three in the team standings 25 times, including each of the last four seasons. Last year, Providence captured its league-leading 15th BIG EAST team title. Providence cross country returns to action on November 10 at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship. The event will be held at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
